The famous red brick “Home Alone” house has finally been sold to its new owners — and they’re all in on its Hollywood story.
The Georgian-style estate in Winnetka, Illinois, known as the McCallister family residence in the 1990 holiday classic “Home Alone,” has sold for $5.5 million, according to Mansion Global. That’s $250,000 better than the original asking price of $5.25 million.
Listed in May 2024, the property snapped up in just one week, but the deal didn’t close until last Thursday after a wait of more than seven months.
Why the delay? Sellers wanted one last year-end hit on the home that made movie history.
“There was agreement that the sellers would love the opportunity to stay in the home for another holiday season,” Lori Nieman of @properties Christie’s International Real Estate told the buyer’s agent Mansion Global. Dawn McKenna of Coldwell Banker Realty represented the listing.
The sale marks the first time in more than a decade that the apartment has changed hands.
The previous owners bought the property in 2012 for $1.58 million through a trust and had kept a low profile throughout the sale.
Built in 1921, the 9,100-square-foot mansion underwent a major renovation in 2018, blending modern luxury with its beloved cinematic charm.
Updates include a sleek open-concept kitchen, a private home theater and even an indoor sports court.
However, the house’s most recognizable features – like Kevin McCallister’s (Macaulay Culkin) grand staircase fantastically descended by sled – remain intact.
Nieman said her clients were struck by some of the home’s winning attributes.
“Like everyone else, they love the importance of the house and its place in cinematic history. They understand that and they embrace it,” she said. “That said, the house and all the wonderful renovations and expansion of the house also played into their decision.”
The five-bedroom, six-bathroom estate is located just 20 miles north of Chicago and boasts a luxurious master suite complete with a gas fireplace, a walk-in closet, and a spa-like bathroom with a soaking tub and spa amenities. double.
The property is also just a few blocks from charming downtown Winnetka Village and the shores of Lake Michigan.
While the identities of the new owners remain under wraps — those details are not yet in the public record — Nieman assured that they are thrilled to be the latest custodians of this piece of film history.
“They want to be homemakers for a long time,” she said.
